What is inside Alhambra Palace?
Alhambra is city castle complex, a so-called Kasbah, known for its stunning Islamic architecture and later Christian Renaissance style, as well as its rich history.
Visitors to the Alhambra can explore various sections, each offering unique experiences:
Alcazaba
Step back in time within the Alhambra’s mighty heart, the Alcazaba, which is one of the oldest parts of the complex. Its origins trace back to the 9th century, with the earliest historical mention attributed to Sawwar ben Hamdun, suggesting his role in its initial construction.
Mohammed I transformed the Alcazaba into a formidable fortress by constructing ramparts, defenses, and three towers: The Broken Tower, the Keep, and the Watch Tower, from which today you can enjoy panoramic views over Granada, the Sierra Nevada and beyond.
This renovation established it as the royal residence, later inherited by Mohammed II until the completion of the palaces. After the Christian conquest, extensive repairs were conducted, and the Alcazaba served as a State prison during various historical periods, including the French occupation.
Must-sees at the Alcazaba:
- Arms Square
- Arms Tower
- Watch Tower
- Garden of the Ramparts
Nasrid Palaces
Step into a jewel-toned fairytale at the Nasrid Palaces, Alhambra Palace’s crown jewel. They were shaped by Mohammed I’s move to the Alcazaba. Yusuf I’s improvements and Mohammed V’s additions, including the Mexuar and the Palace of the Lions, marked pivotal moments. The Mexuar, though altered over time, retains a historic eastern section near the Tower of Mohammed I.
Noteworthy spaces within include the Oratory, Gilded Room, and the Court of the Myrtles, distinguished by myrtle bushes. The Comares Palace, adorned in Muslim style, and the towering Comares Tower are central. The Palace of the Lions, a private retreat, encompasses diverse chambers and the iconic Patio of the Lions.
Other highlights include the Hall of the Abencerrajes and the Harem, reflecting the residence’s intricate past. Daraxa’s Mirador and the Emperor’s Chambers, associated with Washington Irving, reveal additional layers of historical significance. The Queen’s Dressing Room, Patio of the Wrought Iron Grille, Daraxa’s Garden, and the Baths add to the mosaic of Alhambra’s architectural and cultural heritage.

Completed more than 400 years later in 1957, the square palace with a unique circular patio stands as Spain’s paramount Renaissance-style structure. While the southern and western façades boast intricate decorations, the northern and southern sides integrate seamlessly with the Alhambra palaces, showcasing a harmonious blend of architectural styles.
